La Nouvieille – Lemozi

I was asked to do a plate for the refurbishing of the house where a notorious prehistory expert, Amédée Lemozi, was born in 1882. Among others, he was the first to publish a research paper on the Pech Merle, whose map is reimagined into a background pattern for the plate. It evokes geological maps and the underground contortions of a cave. The typeface originates from a local newspaper ‘Journal du Lot’, that announced this pioneering study in 1929. I digitalised the letter from the header and completed the missing letters of the bold slab serif font. The other part of the name ‘La Nouvielle’ is a contraction of ‘nouvelle’ (new) and ‘vieille’ (old) a young member of the family invented. The final design is engraved in white ink on a glass plate, so then it visually dialogues with the stone wall of the house.

For the opening party, I created a card in the shape of the house’s profile. The folds hide architectural details and space for each guest to write a note.
